Interviews Available with Filmmaker & Participants

First Run presents the streaming premiere of Charles Frank's new documentary Somewhere with no Bridges, beginning October 26, 2021.

Heralded as "a celebration of life like you've never seen," the film is a a stirring, lyrical journey beneath the brusque, reticent surface of a New England fishing community.

Twenty years after a beloved local fisherman, Richie Madeiras, goes missing off the shores of Martha's Vineyard, a distant cousin locates Richie's kind, indelible spirit in the stories of family, friends, and the sweeping sea which has defined their lives.

Director's Statement  by Charles Frank

Having been raised in a New England culture of hyper-masculinity and emotional reserve, I was always grateful for the way my cousin Richie seemed to stir something deep within my father, even in the years following his disappearance. I set out to search for Richie’s spirit in hopes of better understanding this phenomenon. In the process, I was able to develop an intimacy with my father (and other, equally guarded men) in a way that I could have never imagined. My greatest hope is that this film will remind anyone that feels divided or distant from someone they love to search for that one thing that connects them.
To build a bridge in a place that seems to have none.
